What is Reblocking?

Reblocking (also called restumping) is the process of replacing the old stumps — the posts that sit beneath your home and support the entire structure — with new, modern ones. In older Melbourne homes, these stumps were typically made from timber, which naturally deteriorates over decades due to moisture, insects, and age.

When stumps fail, your home loses its stable base. The result? Sloping floors, cracking walls, sticking doors and windows, and in serious cases, structural collapse. Reblocking fixes the problem at its source — giving your home a solid, lasting foundation.

Signs You Need Reblocking

Many homeowners don’t realise their stumps are failing until the symptoms become severe. Watch out for these warning signs:

Uneven or sloping floors  If you feel like you’re walking uphill or your furniture rocks on what should be a flat floor, stump failure is likely the cause.

Bouncy or springy floors  Floors that flex underfoot indicate stumps that have rotted through and can no longer bear the load of your home.

Cracks in walls or ceilings  — Especially diagonal cracks running from corners of doors and windows — these are a classic sign of foundation movement.

Doors and windows that stick  When your frame shifts, doors and windows go out of square and become difficult or impossible to open properly.

Visible gaps between floors and walls  A gap where your skirting board meets the floor, or where the wall meets the ceiling, suggests movement in the structure.

Your home is pre-1980s  Older Melbourne homes were almost universally built on timber stumps, which have a lifespan of 40–75 years. If yours haven’t been replaced, they’re likely due.

Did You Know?
Melbourne’s reactive clay soil shrinks and swells dramatically with seasonal moisture changes — putting enormous stress on timber stumps. This makes reblocking far more common in Melbourne than most other Australian cities.

Our Reblocking Process

We make the reblocking process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here’s how it works from
start to finish:

Free On-Site Inspection
We visit your home at no cost, crawl under the subfloor, and assess the condition of every stump. We use a
spirit level to check floor levelness across every room.

Detailed Written Quote
We provide a clear, itemised quote with no hidden costs. You’ll know exactly how many stumps need
replacing, what type we’ll use, and the total cost — before we start.

Temporary Jacking
We carefully jack up the affected sections of your home using hydraulic jacks, one section at a time, to
remove the old stumps safely without damaging your structure.

New Stump Installation
New concrete or galvanised steel stumps are installed in pre-drilled holes, set to the correct height, and
secured in concrete footings that extend well below ground level.

Levelling & Final Checks
Every floor is checked for levelness, doors and windows are tested, and we make any fine adjustments
needed. We don’t leave until your home is perfectly level.

Types of Stumps We Use

We only use premium, Australian-standard materials that are built to last. The right type of stump
depends on your soil conditions, home size, and budget.

Concrete Stumps

The most popular choice. Pre-cast concrete stumps are extremely strong, rot-proof, and termite-resistant. They’re cost-effective and typically last 80–100+ years.

MOST POPULAR

Galvanised Steel Stumps

Adjustable steel stumps allow for future relevelling without excavation. Ideal for reactive soils where the ground continues to move
seasonally.

BEST FOR CLAY SOIL

Treated Timber Stumps

Chemically treated hardwood stumps provide a more economical option in certain applications. Still far superior to the old untreated stumps they replace.
